Russia’s Defense Ministry revealed on Wednesday that it had a plan to send new air defense systems to Syria. The day before, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that Israel would probably strike the defense systems if they use them to attack the country. “One thing should be clear – if someone fires on our planes, we will destroy them,” he said. Lieberman claimed Israel has no problem with the new delivery as long as they’re not used against them.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ambassador denied the accusation and said it had no intent on using the weapons against Israel even after the constant attacks on Syria. According to Lieberman, the anti-aircraft defense systems have been on Syrian soil for quite some time, but there is no indication they’re used to target Israel. The technology being in Syria is actually not a new idea. In fact, they’ve been deployed there for a number of years, and some have been successfully struck down due to direct conflicts with Israel.
Russia hasn’t made any decision on whether the new missile systems will be delivered soon, but it won’t try to hide if the decision is made in the future. Some experts suggest Israel won’t take it lightly since the weaponry could pose a serious threat. They even believe those air defense systems will be struck like before. Israel has negotiated with Russia for years to prevent the powerful system from being used by Syria. This is also the reason why it took so long before Iran got its first s-300 batteries although it had paid for them long before.
It’s understandable that Israel is highly concerned about the new S-300 because they’re allegedly more advanced, able to track multiple airborne targets all at once. They also can sense danger from miles away. It doesn’t end there, these systems are designed to handle ballistic missiles more precisely. The Air Defense Systems owned by Syria now are apparently an older generation, but could be significantly improved with the S-300.
