Two things happened yesterday that should make every citizen mad.
In Florida, Helen Warren is running for an at-large seat on the Gainesville City Commission. One of her campaign signs in the yard of a supporter was vandalized with an anti-gay slur. There is no room for hate and intimidation in any election at any level.
We have just a couple of weeks left to have an impact. A realtor and a Democrat, Helen Warren has been an active member of the community for decades and is a leading voice on environmental and wildlife protection.
In Chattanooga, Tennessee, the City Election Commission voted to allow a recall petition to move forward against City Councilman Chris Anderson. Chris was elected to the city council just 10 months ago and is the city's first openly gay city council member. Stuart James, Councilman Anderson's attorney said, "the recall was being brought because Councilman Anderson is openly gay and championed a controversial domestic partners ordinance.”
Chris Anderson has been an active participant in the Tennessee Democratic Party and a leader in the Young Democrats of America. He needs to know that there is help to fight back against this blatant recall effort.
We just can't set back and let hate, ignorance and intimidation rule the day. We must stand up for these two great Democrats now.
